The Power of Servant Leadership

The other day I received the company's news via e-mail, you know, that list of news about your employer and other fellow workers... usually very boring... anyway... in this one I read about a guy and his achievements... blah, blah, blah... but he mentioned he is reading the book that is the reason and title of this post: The Power of Servant Leadership.

Instantly the suggestive title got me into Amazon and I was able to read a little bit about it... here some lines from it I think are worth to share:

"... If a better society is to be built, one more just and one more caring and providing opportunity for people to grow, the most effective and economical way while supportive of the social order, is to raise the performance as servant of as many institutions as possible by new voluntary regenerative forces initiated within them by committed individuals: servants."

"... I have come to believe that a serious lack of vision is a malady of epidemic proportions among the whole gamut of institutions that I know quite intimately: churches, schools, businesses, philanthropies. And that needed vision is not likely to be supplied by the administrative leadership of those places."

"... If there is to be a constant infusion of vision that all viable institutions need, whatever their missions, the most likely source of those visions is their trustees who are involved enough to know, yet detached enough from managerial concern, that their imaginations are relatively unimpaired."

I didn't know there is a lot of information about the concept of Servant Leadership, you might like it as well as this book, unless you are an administrator ;-)

Telecomm videos on YouTube

After finding that Tellabs has an interesting site focus on "schooling" the masses, I searched YouTube for videos from the big boys: the telecoms like Motorola, Nortel, Lucent (R.I.P), Alcatel (AlcaLu after eating Lucent... haha!!), Ericsson, Siemens and obviously Tellabs too. Here the results:

Bell Labs Song

Nortel -- Our Story

Siemens Japan Promo Video

Tellabs DynamicHome Solution

The other companies didn't have anything good to share with you.... btw, don't you think the Bells Labs Song is hilarious?

Google bigger plan for Mobile Phones

Google seems to "wanna be" another Cellular Provider? Why is Google trying to buy RF spectrum? What is behind all the following signals?

Developed Android software for mobile phones.
Made Google applications -- including email, chat and mapping -- available on cellphones.
Sells advertisements for certain Web sites accessed by cellphone.
Enables users to do Web and business searches with cellphone browsers, by text message or with a call.
Is testing an advanced wireless network at Google headquarters.
Operates a free Wi-Fi network in Mountain View, Calif.
Expected to bid for wireless spectrum in a January FCC auction.

Google Maps running on Android

Will all these lead to a future national cellular/wireless provider?

A final answer for all these questions remains to be seen, but a glimpse to what is going on has been provided by The Wall Street Journal Online in this article.

Einstein Puzzle... Who owns the Fish?

Urban legend has it that this puzzle was written by Einstein (Lewis Carroll also given attribution) and that he claimed only 2% of the world's population could solve it.

Which percentage are you in?

OR

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE PUZZLE
There are five houses in five different colors.
In each house lives a person of a different nationality.
These five owners drink a certain beverage, smoke a certain brand of cigarette and keep a certain pet.
No owners have the same pet, smoke the same brand of smoke or drink the same drink.

GIVEN THAT:
  1. The Brit lives in the red house.
  2. The Swede keeps dogs as pets.
  3. The Dane drinks tea.
  4. The green house is on the left of the white house.
  5. The green house owner drinks coffee.
  6. The person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds.
  7. The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhill.
  8. The man living in the house right in the center drinks milk.
  9. The Norwegian lives in the first house.
  10. The man who smokes Blend lives next to the one who keeps cats.
  11. The man who keeps horses lives next to the man who smokes Dunhill.
  12. The owner who smokes Blue Master drinks beer.
  13. The German smokes Prince.
  14. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.
  15. The man who smokes Blend has a neighbor who drinks water.
The question is: WHO OWNS THE FISH?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No fair looking up the solution online or writing code to solve it for you. I was forced to solve this puzzle last night under threat of pre-teen ridicule.

But, if you are so lacy to solve it and just want the answer, then follow this link.... shame on you! hahaha!!!

Mitsubishi Outlander... Japan, USA or Europe?

Have you ever thought about buying a Mitsubishi? In particular an Outlander? You don't see them very often in the highways or around your city, right?

The Outlander seems to be very popular in Japan, at least according with this note back in 2006: New Mitsubishi Outlander Japan's Best Selling SUV

Basically we have 2 versions: Japan/USA version and Europe version, besides the original concept... here the pictures:

The Concept
Europe version
USA version

Well, then... why aren't they popular? An answer for the Outlander itself will be hard to guess, but (it has been a long time since I wanted to know this) why Mitsubishi vehicles are not popular in the USA market? I haven't found the answer yet, but I heard Mitsubishi had a bad model in the 80's, when they were starting in the USA market, since then their reputation has been terrible... no matter what! If you know any other reason, please post a comment.

World's Best Bottoms are from Bulgaria and Romania

So... what happened with the Brazilians or Italians women? were they in the contest?
Anyway, guys were also there... not that I care, but I will be fair with the female readers ;-)

Here the note from Reuters:

"Oct. 31 - Two winners are awarded the hotly-contested title of the "world's most beautiful bottom".

19-year-old Kristina Dimitrova from Bulgaria and Andrei Andrei aged 24 from Romania won the women's and men's categories in the world's best bum contest, organised by the underwear maker Sloggi.

43 candidates from 28 countries battled it out at the final in Munich to convince the jury of the quality of their behind.

Portable phone's inventors didn't foresee its popularity

This note appeared in the Chicago Tribune web edition a few days ago. The thing is that the celular phone were not popular until 20 years after it was invented the first version: Motorola DynaTAC.

"It was 10 years after we built the first phone that it became a commercial product, and 10 years after that when it really started to become popular with consumers," Donald Linder, a retired Motorola engineer who led the mobile phone research team, said.

Working long hours and drawing on Motorola's widespread resources, Linder's team produced the DynaTAC, also known as the "brick phone." It was 9 inches long, not counting the antenna, and weighed more than 2 pounds, but you could carry it, and it worked.

The Death of the Midsize Tech Company in Telecom

"Like software, another industry that is crying for (a similar) consolidation is telecom. There have been few deals such as Ericsson’s $2 billion purchase of Redback Networks, or Nokia teaming up with Siemens to form Nokia-Siemens Networks (NSN), but those are not enough.

While the number of carriers, a.k.a. customers, has gone down drastically, the number of hardware vendors hasn’t changed much. The power is now in the hands of incumbent carriers, who can afford to play off increasingly desperate telecom equipment makers. A few senior executives have acknowledged this in private conversations."

"Maybe telecom needs its own Larry Ellison! Anyone?"

Very interesting topic, specially for people involved (somehow) in the telecom world. Based on this I jumped into Larry Ellison bio in wikipedia together with the history of Oracle.

Keep in mind, if we can see what is coming, then we can react on time... specially if a future lay off is on its way ;-)

Downloading Award: $222,000... do you want to pay it?

I am sure your answer will be NO!. But there is a woman who will pay it, not because she wants to. She lost her case in a court a few days ago, the reason: downloading music and allowing others to download music from her computer.

So, I guess it is better if you stop downloading music without paying for it. Otherwise, now you know what might happen to you.

The need for more Bandwidth (FTTH Conference)

Probably you already read the original article "FTTH Conference considers what's next", but I think the following comments are interesting…

  • "Today, YouTube accounts for about 7% of all U.S. Internet traffic, consuming 50 Petabytes per month or 600 Petabytes a year--which is greater that the entire Internet in the year 2000."
  • "Today, the U.S. generates about 20 Exabytes of voice traffic per year. But the move to videophones would generate about 200 Exabytes at least or about ten times the size of the existing world Internet."
  • "FTTH may be the key industry for the health of the overall U.S. economy in the next five to ten years."
  • "David Spence, staff product manager at Tellabs, noted that service providers, by and large, are looking to leverage what they've already deployed (e.g., GPON), but they also want more bandwidth, longer reach, improved economics, and more intelligence."
  • "Ronald Herron, director of network technology and strategy at Alcatel-Lucent, noted that GPON will be sufficient through 2011--if service providers changed split ratios from the currently favored 1 x 32 to 1 x 8."
  • "This week's FTTH Conference underscored one undeniable fact: bandwidth requirements will continue to increase."
Who did say "there is not need for more bandwidth"?

Would you like to read an article about the FTTX market in Europe? I am sure it won't hurt you.

Hot Skills Employers Want!

"Anyone who can write term papers, cram for exams, survive the roommate from hell, run a campus club, participate in sports or tackle other college challenges deserves a job & has demonstrated the ability to hold one. You are likely to develop these qualities in college:

1. Critical thinking: seeing the big picture and being analytical; comprehending what you read
2. Communication: getting your point across effectively when writing and speaking
3. Visionary qualities: brainstorming, looking into the future, and setting goals
4. Self-motivation: showing willingness to take the initiative
5. Proficiency with information: being inquisitive and resourceful, knowing how to conduct research
6. Globally-minded: understanding of other cultures
7. Teamwork: working together to achieve goals

Chances are, you possess a number of these key competencies. Once you realize you are very skilled, you'll be better able to sell yourself to employers as exactly the type of candidate they want."

This is basically what Michelle Tullier is telling us in her article "The skills you have and the skills they want". But, are we really aware of these skills? I mean, do we know we have these skills? In what amount do we have them? how can we be so sure about having them and showing them to our potential manager in an interview? These are the remaining questions to be answered.

World's Top Carriers Pronounce OIF Interoperability Demo a Success

From Yahoo Finance...

"... AT&T, China Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom, KDDI, Telecom Italia and Verizon hosted the event at lab facilities in six countries, on three continents. The Carriers said the event was of vital importance to the industry and to the development of Ethernet Services.

The Demo was also a complete success from an equipment supplier view. Eight optical equipment suppliers highlighted solutions for support of Ethernet services over multi-domain SONET/SDH transport networks by employing OIF Implementation Agreements (IAs) in a multi-carrier, multi-vendor environment. Participating system suppliers included Alcatel-Lucent, Ciena, Ericsson, Huawei Technologies, Marben Products, Sycamore Networks, Tellabs and ZTE.
...
The ability to establish bandwidth connections from 50 Mb/s to 1 Gb/s, or even 10Gb/s, over a dynamic control plane optical core network will transform how bandwidth services are viewed by our Enterprise customers. Key enablers bringing the network transformation to reality are: the economical availability of GigE access ports; and bandwidth availability and grooming expansions from OXCs, ROADMs and packet enabled transport platforms.
..."

Now the question: how does it affect us? From the perspective of a regular user I guess we won't see the benefits in the near future, but from the perspective of worldwide companies I guess it will be great to know they can interconnect all their branch offices using the most popular and worldwide deployed standard for networks: ETHERNET!
Uhmmm... what about online games? does it mean it will be faster to play and interact with other gamers worldwide?... will see.

Justice Department Opposes 'Net Neutrality'

This is the title of the latest news regarding Net Neutrality. I seriously don't find this fair, does it mean we will have to pay our bills for Internet access based on the web sites we visited? how can we trust they are charging the right amount? does it mean they will keep track of our "clicks" legally? This goes against our right to privacy. Or, will they charge based on our speed only? aren't they doing it already?
If this means this will work like the USPS service, does it mean they can charge us more money if for example we want to connect to www.google.com in 10 miliseconds versus 1 second?
Bottom line... this is B.S.!!! One more time the lobbysts seems to be doing their job pretty well... who is going to represent the common user like you or me?

Swedish woman gets superfast Internet

"STOCKHOLM, Sweden - She is a latecomer to the information superhighway, but 75-year-old Sigbritt Lothberg is now cruising the Internet with a dizzying speed. Lothberg's 40 gigabits-per-second fiber-optic connection in Karlstad is believed to be the fastest residential uplink in the world, Karlstad city officials said."

Original source here: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070719/ap_on_hi_te/sweden_high_speed_internet

But seriously, who really needs that speed? Don't you have more than enough with 6, 4 or even 1.5 Mbps? What do you really do that justifies this amount of speed? Do you still watch TV via cable? Did you know that you only need 1.5 Mbps to download IPTV? So, unless you have 4 computers downloading streams for IPTV at the same time (meaning you, your wife and your 2 kids are watching TV shows on 4 different computers at the same time... mmm...) then, just then you might need 6+ Mbps.

Well, more speed then more charges then more profit for the company providing this service.

Book review: Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer

It looks like this book is pretty good, at least the review might sound pretty interesting. I hope you like it, and if you read it, please let me know.
For the people out there who ever thought (maybe still think) that returning to a simple life might be not that crazy, this book and its coming movie will be very touching.

Once again... thanks for reading.

Book Jacket Summary & Media Reviews for "Into The Wild"

... " In April 1992 a young man from a well-to-do family hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. His name was Christopher Johnson McCandless. He had given $25,000 in savings to charity, abandoned his car and most of his possessions, burned all the cash in his wallet, and invented a new life for himself. Four months later, his decomposed body was found by a moose hunter. How McCandless came to die is the unforgettable story of Into the Wild.

Immediately after graduating from college in 1991, McCandless had roamed through the West and Southwest on a vision quest like those made by his heroes Jack London and John Muir. In the Mojave Desert he abandoned his car, stripped it of its license plates, and burned all of his cash. He would give himself a new name, Alexander Supertramp, and , unencumbered by money and belongings, he would be free to wallow in the raw, unfiltered experiences that nature presented. Craving a blank spot on the map, McCandless simply threw the maps away. Leaving behind his desperate parents and sister, he vanished into the wild.

Jon Krakauer constructs a clarifying prism through which he reassembles the disquieting facts of McCandless's short life. Admitting an interest that borders on obsession, he searches for the clues to the dries and desires that propelled McCandless. Digging deeply, he takes an inherently compelling mystery and unravels the larger riddles it holds: the profound pull of the American wilderness on our imagination; the allure of high-risk activities to young men of a certain cast of mind; the complex, charged bond between fathers and sons.

When McCandless's innocent mistakes turn out to be irreversible and fatal, he becomes the stuff of tabloid headlines and is dismissed for his naiveté, pretensions, and hubris. He is said to have had a death wish but wanting to die is a very different thing from being compelled to look over the edge. Krakauer brings McCandless's uncompromising pilgrimage out of the shadows, and the peril, adversity , and renunciation sought by this enigmatic young man are illuminated with a rare understanding--and not an ounce of sentimentality. Mesmerizing, heartbreaking, Into the Wild is a tour de force. The power and luminosity of Jon Krakauer's storytelling blaze through every page." ...

Linux Leaders Plot Counterattack on Microsoft

"The high priests of free software have congregated at Google Inc. headquarters this week to debate the future of the movement and face down recent patent threats by Microsoft Corp."

"Recently, Microsoft has sown dissension by claiming open source programs such as Linux violate 235 of its patents while striking deals to insulate the customers of two Linux suppliers—Novell and Xandros—from patent lawsuits."

"... most believe Linux users control their own destinies and Microsoft's patent threats are just the latest attempts to create "fear, uncertainty and doubt" among customers. After closed-down sessions Thursday and Friday, the group aims to issue a consensus statement next week on what they plan to do."

"There are as many as 360 rival flavors of Linux, known as distributions, according to Distrowatch.com. This factionalism fuels rapid innovation but splits the energies of developers."

Hi,

This time, the first of all my blogs ever, the posting has to be a political one. But this place on the web is not only for politics and things like this. My intention is to cover everything I(we) am interested in. In any case, lets go to the point.

To whoever is reading this. Please, if you are capable of voting in the upcoming presidential elections, DO IT. Just do it consciously, spend some of your time and read at least a little bit about every single candidate. It is not important where you are (republican, democrat, etc), just do it knowing why. If you don't know where to start, here I have a little link for you:

Over all, remember your VOTE affects other people besides YOU, it affects your children, your neighbours, your friends and every single person living in USA (legal or ilegal). But this time it also affects the whole planet, the third rock from the sun, by the future policies of the administration in the most powerful country of the planet will take.

THANK YOU for reading this blog.
